An event featuring 16 productions from the catalog of Taiwan-based director Tsai Ming-liang is scheduled for June 4 to July 5 in Barcelona as part of the 2025 Year of Taiwan Culture in Europe initiative, launched by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in February.
According to the MOC, the event is being organized by its Spanish office in collaboration with Filmoteca de Catalunya and covers Tsai’s film, TV production and documentary work. Discussion sessions with the director himself, Taiwan actor Lee Kang-sheng and Anong Houngheuangsy, a Laos-born actor based in Taiwan, are on the schedule for selected presentations.
The event comprises 30 screenings of Tsai’s productions, including “Days,” “Rebels of the Neon God,” “Face” and “Stray Dogs,” as well as three masterclass sessions, the MOC said, adding that the retrospective is expected to help European audiences better understand Taiwan’s vibrant cinematic landscape.
Born in Malaysia in 1957 and educated in drama and cinema in Taiwan from the age of 20, Tsai said it was an honor to be featured at this international event and share experiences from his career of more than three decades. He added that he looks forward to in-depth discussions and exchanges with the audience in Spain, and expressed the wish to take part in collaborative film or curation projects there in the future.
The MOC said the upcoming event follows a film festival spotlighting the late Taiwan director Edward Yang in 2023, which was also a collaboration with Filmoteca de Catalunya. The ministry said it will continue promoting Taiwan cinema in Spain and throughout Europe. (SFC-E)
